Tom Rees Sweeps California Wine Tasting Championships

Tom Rees of St. Supery Winery rode the momentum of his close win in the Professional Singles division to sweep the Individual Grand Championship as well at the California Wine Tasting Championships July 29 and 30. A newcomer to competitive wine tasting, Tom edged veteran David Greene of Ramey Wine Cellars by one point to climax the dramatic day of singles competition.

Otherwise, experience and persistence paid off as veteran competitors took the remaining titles. The Amateur Singles title went to Peter Heinecke of San Francisco; Lana Novak and Andy Bloom of Incline Village, Nevada, won the Amateur Doubles division. Perennial champion Mark Bowery of the Albion River Inn teamed with Sarah Hassell, representing the Henry Wine Group, to win the Professional Doubles title.

We have hosted the California Wine Tasting Championships every year since 1983. The party includes chocolate tasting and cheese tasting contests, delicious food, great live music and the wine tasting competition. There are opportunities to compete at all skill levels, from novice to professional.

Next year we will be celebrating our 25th birthday the weekend of July 28 and 29, 2007. We will be expanding the competition to celebrate the 25 years. For 2007 we are planning a Master's Championship inviting all past champions in the Amateur and Professional divisions and all Individual Grand Championship winners to compete for the Masters title. We are also introducing a Doubles Grand Championship for the first time. It will be great fun for spectators as well as contestants, so don't miss it!

New Solar Power

When you drive by our tasting room in Philo you will notice a new array of solar panels. Up and running as of July, they are providing more than enough power to fully operate the tasting room. The panels installed last year on the winery roof are generating more power than we need as well. The excess goes into the PG&E grid, helping to prevent the rolling "brownouts" we are all threatened with each summer.

Our first vintage of Mendovino has just been released. A blend of Merlot (88%) and Zinfandel (12%), it follows the spring release of the first Mendovino Rosé. The 2005 Mendovino is pinch hitting for Home Run Red, which has been retired and enshrined in the Hall of Fame.

California Poppy Seeds

We have teamed up with our creative neighbors at Wildflowers International to send each member of our Advance Tasting Club a decorative gift tin of California Poppy seeds. California Poppies grow wild all over Mendocino County, including in our vineyard and around our tasting room. So we're spreading around some floral California sunshine. Just plant the seeds, water 'em and stand back!
